Bleach Pen + Denim Book Bag = Back to School Nautical Style

bleach pen tote
I am still loving bleach pen designs!  This project was featured on Creative Juice and it will always be a favorite! You can use ribbons, buttons, and a bleach pen to design a personalized tote bag featuring your favorite travel themes ~ or any theme.  It is dang easy and the same technique works on almost any cotton fabric.
Supplies:
Store-bought denim tote bag
Bleach pen
Decorative ribbon or trim
Buttons
Sewing machine or hand sewing needle and thread
Optional: light-colored transfer paper

Steps:
1. Line the inside of the bag with plastic or several layers of newspaper to prevent the bleach from bleeding through to the back of the bag. Draw a design on your bag with the bleach pen. You can either freehand a design or transfer an image onto the bag with transfer paper to guide you as you draw. Spread the bleach gel on evenly, popping any air bubbles that appear. Allow the bleach gel to dry; this will take around 45 minutes to an hour.

2. Rinse the bleach off of the bag and hand wash in cold, soapy water. Allow to dry.

3. Add extra flair to the tote bag by adding ribbon, decorative trim, buttons, or other embellishments.

Inspiration for this project came from the book. Fashion DIY: 30 Ways to Craft Your Own Style
by Carrie Blaydes and Nicole Smith Sixth&Spring Books
